sweet...

dodger stadium
how sweet it is!!!
baseball at it's best!!!
the dodgers vanquished the hated giants yesterday afternoon, in the home season opener at dodger stadium, and did so by overcoming a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning, with a four-run rally against the giants new 21 million dollar closer...
go blue!!!
it just doesn't get any better than that!!!
(well, except for the kirk gibson walk-off home run against the athletics in the '88 world series)
assuredly, professional sports have become less gratifying in the last ten years, with the exception of the NFL and MLB - college sports seem so much cleaner, more emotional, less predictable...
however baseball, at all it's levels (pro, minors, college, little league) has somehow become more enjoyable at this stage of life, and, for a number of reasons; starting with a more complete understanding of it's complexities and nuances, the statistics, the solo nature of batter vs. pitcher (mano y mano so to speak), the informal social nature of attending a game with friends (a baseball game in summer, with beer and hot dogs - a high-grade adventure), the sportsmanship qualities that seem so sorely lacking in other sports, the relatively limited number of self-absorbed, spoiled, ego-centric jerks (though we still have barry bonds), the pure american nature of it's roots, and the list goes on...
in addition, there is a certain perverse thrill/joy in being a contrarian here in northern california, being the LA guy amongst all the giant, 49er, cal and stanford fans, totally outnumbered and surrounded by them - but what a terrific venue from which to torment their misguided little success-starved souls...

Yeah, yeah, enjoy it while it lasts. It's more important to win in October than in April.

And bragging that you beat the Giants without their two biggest offensive threats is a lot like bragging you beat the Niners without Montana or Rice or the Lakers without Magic or Worthy...

While I agree with most of what you have to say about baseball, I'd disagree that there are fewer egocentric jerks. I'd say it's about on par with all the other sports. And if Cal's not playing or it's not March Madness, I don't really find any college sport better than the pros. And that includes basketball and I don't really care for basketball.

What about Milton Bradley? For a while after Tommy retired and Piazza left there was a shortage of truly hateable Dodgers save Paul Loduca (and only because he absolutely killed us), then they had to go and trade for that jerkwad. I guess I should be grateful since it gave me someone to really dislike.

Still 155 games left...I hope you don't believe in karma with all the crap you've been talking the last week or so.

Go Giants!!!

seems to me that the giants weren't even playing in october last year - and remember, the dodgers have two starters on the disabled list and have still taken three of four...

You've got to be kidding. It wasn't the closer's fault. Three errors will kill you every time. The hardest piece to swallow about that game was Jeff Kent's comments.... We'll revue things mid season to see about them Dodgers.

the correct number of giant errors for that game was four...

Well well, it has begun. Thank you Chris for the reminder about winning games in October. I almost forgot how many my beloved blue won last year! I like winning in April and October, and it looks very much like the Dodgers will be doing both. And in dramatic style!

I would have 88 envy if I were a fan of any other team as well.

It will be an entertaining summer, I look forward to more entertaining banter.

the dodgers won again wednesday nite and have now won four of five from the giants as the giants slowly sink into the bowels of the division
